The Gold Ball is a fantastic opportunity for companies and investors in the precious metals sector to come together and celebrate a year of achievement of those that have made an outstanding contribution to the gold industry.
During the evening, awards were presented to Peter Cook, Westgold for the ‘Gavin Thomas’ Mining Award, John Feeney, ABC Bullion for the ‘Maggie’ Bullion Award, and Owen Hegarty, EMR Capital for the ‘Gold Industry Hall of Fame’ Award.

The Gavin Thomas Mining Award
Long-time Kingsgate Consolidated Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Gavin Thomas was a brilliant geologist and a passionate advocate of the mining industry. The recipient of this award will be a company or individual that shows not only dedication to the industry but one who creates a strong team ethic and carries with them a unique ability to get the job done while still maintaining a joie de vivre.

The "Maggie" Bullion Award
This award will be given to an individual or company that shows initiative and exceptional customer service in the precious metals industry. Just like the lady, Cheryl Holt, whom the award was named after the recipient will be a company or individual that has shown quality of service, industry knowledge, and contribution to the community and good/consistent communication.

Kicking Gold – Industry Awards 2019
The gold industry, including miners, explorers, and producers, recognised three outstanding individuals at the Gold and Alternative Investment Conference Awards Dinner, held at the Sofitel Hotel on Thursday 24th October 2019.
The Gavin Thomas Mining Award honours the memory of Gavin Thomas, a widely regarded and highly esteemed geologist who lost his battle with cancer in 2014. The Award is recognition of an industry stalwart who had dedicated their career to the advancement of the industry.
Peter Cook, Managing Director of Westgold Resources is the recipient of the 6th Gavin Thomas Mining Award for his advocacy and promotion of the gold mining industry. Peter enjoys widespread admiration for his passion, enthusiasm and support with many industry players recognising him as having “a finger in almost every gold exploration pie in Australia”. Peter Cook has over 30 years of experience and is renowned for ensuring upside for his shareholders.
The Hall of Fame Award is presented to an individual that has been an inspiration to the gold industry; they have the respect and admiration of their peers and; have executed ongoing, outstanding achievements in their career, and are supportive to others.
This year’s award winner, Owen Hegarty, has more 40 years of experience in the global mining industry. This included 25 years with the Rio Tinto group where he was Managing Director of Rio Tinto Asia and Rio Tinto’s Australian copper and gold business.
Owen Hegarty embodies all that we love about this industry and the characters that abound. A go-getter that over the years has given shareholder value through careful management of the businesses he has run as well as creating a great team culture. He is universally respected and has achieved a lot over the years including:
As founder and Managing Director of Oxiana Limited, where he led the growth of Oxiana from a junior explorer to a major Asia Pacific base and precious metals producer. Oxiana became OZ Minerals.
He is currently the Executive Chairman of EMR Capital, a specialist mining private equity company. EMR has some US$2.5 billion funds under management and has 8 mining projects and operations worldwide.
The “Maggie” Award is named after Cheryl Holt, a bullion dealer who went by the moniker “Maggie”. Recognised as a woman who went above and beyond the call of duty when searching for gold or silver for clients, Cheryl sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2014. The recipient of this award is selected for their energetic dedication to the gold bullion industry.
This year's Maggie Bullion award is John Feeney, Business Development Manager at ABC Bullion. John is an innovative thinker and a great team player. A leader who strives to bring out the best in not only his team but in all of those who he crosses paths with on a day-to-day basis. He is an experienced business development executive with a demonstrated history of working in the financial services industry.
